In the past, Bostonians ventured to Winchester for some R&R, and you are welcome to do the same now! Winchester has a lot of character to be seen in the old buildings and thriving downtown. While the town does serve as the residential zone for many professionals working in Boston, there is a lot to see and do here.
Ranked the 7th wealthiest municipality in all of Massachusetts, Winchester is home to several high-ranking individuals and families from all kinds of backgrounds. Though the population is small, around an estimated 23,000 people, dwelling in around 7,700 households, the median income for a family is over $200,000. Many of the families are Caucasian, descendants from the Irish and Italian immigrants who had originally settled in Boston but then decided to move to a more quiet and peaceful town. The second greatest group is Asians, making up nearly 10% of the population, followed by African Americans and Hispanics or Latinos.
Nearly half of the families have children, and 66% of married families are living together. Thus, you get a sense of the community within Winchester. The median age is 42-43 years old, so you can expect to meet a lot of parents and find plenty of kid-friendly activities around the town while on a day trip.
Winchester currently has five elementary schools, a single middle school, and the esteemed Winchester High School serving the town’s children. Many publications have ranked Winchester’s educational system as one of the best for multiple years. There are also plenty of private learning institutions, including Montessori and religious schools.
In the past, Winchester was inhabited by Massachusetts tribes, but in 1638, Puritans from Charlestown spread into the land. The land grant was written into the Book of Possessions that same year. The document stated that the grounds had many natural features, included a Waterfield, which lead to the original name of Waterfield Village. It took two more years before the first house was built in 1640 by Edward Converse, and he ran grist mill.
Throughout the 19th century, certain towns were incorporated into Winchester, including Woburn, Cambridge, Medford, and Arlington. Whigs sought to separate from the democratic suburbs of South Woburn, and so in 1850, the representatives won their case, and the new town was dubbed Winchester, recognizing the service of Colonel William P. Winchester. The town hall, which still stands today, was built In 1887.
As time moved forward to the modern age, Winchester developed into a mostly residential town with many taverns, churches, hospitals, and schools. The town became a multicultural hub during the mid-1900s, eventually leading to the foundation of the Multi-Cultural Network. Winchester is also a sister city for France’s St. Germain-en-Laye as of 2007.
