WINTRHOP’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

Located 4 miles east of the famous Massachusetts city of Boston is a smaller, much more quaint townscape known as Winthrop of Suffolk County. The seaside town is picturesque, bright, and ideal for those looking to get away from the endless energy for the big city. Historic Winthrop is an enticing destination for travelers, whether you are traveling solo or with family or friends.

The People and Places of Winthrop

Presently, as of 2016, 18,190 people are living in Winthrop, Massachusetts. Amazingly, the population has not changed much over the years. Even in 2000, the town had just over 18,000 residents, about 7,800 households, and over 4,500 families living there. Nearly half of the households are owned by families. Most of the inhabitants of Winthrop are Caucasian, but there is a blend of other races and ethnic groups as well, including Hispanics, Blacks, and Asians.

Most residents in Winthrop follow a Christian denomination, and the religious places of worship reflect that. There are also Jewish groups in the area.

As one would assume, Winthrop is largely residential, but that doesn’t mean there are not places to go and people to meet. There are several large shopping malls spread throughout the four business districts of the town. The four districts are the Center Business District (or CBD, according to the locals), the Highlands District, the Shirley Street Business District, and Magee’s Corner District. There are also several residential neighborhoods, like Winthrop Beach, Point Shirley, and Cottage Hill.

There are also four schools in Winthrop, so the student body is small and everyone goes to the same school from preschool to 12th grade. The closest college is Bunker Hill Community College.

Of course, this is not the only thing Winthrop has to offer.

The History of Winthrop

In 1630, Winthrop was settled by a group of English Puritan colonists and is now one of the oldest existing communities in the United States. The Puritans called the place Pullen Poynt (or Pulling Point) because the tides made it difficult for boatmen to control the ships. However, the town was eventually renamed after a man called John Winthrop, who was a Puritan leader and second governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Originally, Winthrop was apart of a place called Winnisimmet by the native tribe, but the then-named Pullen Poynt became annexed by the steadily growing Boston in 1632. For a while, the town was used as a place for grazing livestock until 1637, when it was divided up between several men from Boston and developed into prosperous farmland. One of the earliest houses was the Deane Winthrop House, belonging to the governor’s son. It continues to stand and is open to visitors today.

Other historical places of significant exist in Winthrop today as exciting attractions.

Winthrop Today: What To See and Do

Winthrop is a wonderful place to visit for one day or several, because there are multiple points of interest, including the following:

  • Beaches: Calling all ocean-lovers! Winthrop has plenty of beaches to lounge in the sun while your kids have a blast. Choose from Winthrop Beach, Yirrell Beach (the all-time favorite of the locals), Donovan’s Beach, Pico Beach, Halford Beach, Short Beach, and Point Shirley Beach.
  • Forts: There are two military strongholds in Winthrop—Fort Heath and Fort Banks. Heath is no longer accessible, but Fort Banks Mortar Battery is open for visitors to learn about US military history and its significance throughout the years.
  • Historic Buildings: Several locations from Winthrop are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Winthrop Center/Metcalf Square Historic District, Winthrop Shore Drive, Fort Banks, Edward B. Newton School, and the Deane Winthrop House.
  • Gastronomy: Businesses are mainly spread throughout the CBD, including awesome restaurants and bars like Black Strap Barbecue, Hong Kong Dragon, Cafe Delite, The Winthrop Book Depot and Cafe and much more. Whatever you’re craving, there is a restaurant in Winthrop with something delicious available.
  • Recreation: Winthrop is active! You will find karate and Tae Kwon Do classes, gyms, outdoor playgrounds, and plenty of walking and bicycling paths. Children and adults alike love visiting Larsen Rink, a state-of-the-art indoor ice skating rink. Meanwhile, golfers will enjoy the Winthrop Golf Course.
  • Nature: If you love nature, then you need to head to Deer Island within the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, where you can see beautiful views, go picnicking, jogging, or fishing.

Travelers from all over will be pleased to know that Winthrop is only mere minutes from Boston’s Logan International Airport, making it the ideal location for a pit stop or even a hotel stay.

If you want to enjoy a little American history while gazing out at Massachusetts Bay views in a serene setting, then Winthrop is the perfect location. You will find plenty to do here for children and adults of every age, whether that is soaking up the sunshine or enjoying one of the many historical sites.
