Located 4 miles east of the famous Massachusetts city of Boston is a smaller, much more quaint townscape known as Winthrop of Suffolk County. The seaside town is picturesque, bright, and ideal for those looking to get away from the endless energy for the big city. Historic Winthrop is an enticing destination for travelers, whether you are traveling solo or with family or friends.

The People and Places of Winthrop

Presently, as of 2016, 18,190 people are living in Winthrop, Massachusetts. Amazingly, the population has not changed much over the years. Even in 2000, the town had just over 18,000 residents, about 7,800 households, and over 4,500 families living there. Nearly half of the households are owned by families. Most of the inhabitants of Winthrop are Caucasian, but there is a blend of other races and ethnic groups as well, including Hispanics, Blacks, and Asians.

Most residents in Winthrop follow a Christian denomination, and the religious places of worship reflect that. There are also Jewish groups in the area.

As one would assume, Winthrop is largely residential, but that doesn’t mean there are not places to go and people to meet. There are several large shopping malls spread throughout the four business districts of the town. The four districts are the Center Business District (or CBD, according to the locals), the Highlands District, the Shirley Street Business District, and Magee’s Corner District. There are also several residential neighborhoods, like Winthrop Beach, Point Shirley, and Cottage Hill.

There are also four schools in Winthrop, so the student body is small and everyone goes to the same school from preschool to 12th grade. The closest college is Bunker Hill Community College.

Of course, this is not the only thing Winthrop has to offer.

The History of Winthrop

In 1630, Winthrop was settled by a group of English Puritan colonists and is now one of the oldest existing communities in the United States. The Puritans called the place Pullen Poynt (or Pulling Point) because the tides made it difficult for boatmen to control the ships. However, the town was eventually renamed after a man called John Winthrop, who was a Puritan leader and second governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Originally, Winthrop was apart of a place called Winnisimmet by the native tribe, but the then-named Pullen Poynt became annexed by the steadily growing Boston in 1632. For a while, the town was used as a place for grazing livestock until 1637, when it was divided up between several men from Boston and developed into prosperous farmland. One of the earliest houses was the Deane Winthrop House, belonging to the governor’s son. It continues to stand and is open to visitors today.

Other historical places of significant exist in Winthrop today as exciting attractions.
