Located at the top of the Mystic River Valley about 10 miles from Boston is the city of Woburn, Massachusetts. The reaches of the city form a distinct L-shape, and 38,000 people call this little bustling place home. Woburn is surrounded by the towns of Stoneham and Reading to the east, Wilmington to the north, Lexington and Burlington to the west, and Winchester in the south. This city has a lot of history and a lot of character, so if you are looking for a day trip or an overnight adventure, why not see what Woburn has to offer?
As mentioned earlier, Woburn is home to about 38,000 people, divided among 9,700 families and an estimated 15,000 households. The population is largely white, with a European background, since many immigrants from Ireland and Canada arrived during the 19th century, looking for work. About half of all married couples in Woburn are living together, and about 26% of the households contain children under 18 years old. This makes Woburn an ideal location for raising a family.
Presently, the public schooling district serves about 4,500 students. There are seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and a single high school. Woburn doesn’t have any colleges in the area, so many students seeking higher education tend to move to other areas of Massachusetts or beyond.
Woburn was settled in 1640 but was soon incorporated in 1642 as a township. This makes Woburn one of the most historic communities of New England, not just Massachusetts. In the beginning, the township of Woburn was mostly focused on tanning hides and shoemaking, and this lasted throughout the 1700s. Woburn remained largely agricultural during this time, but when the Middlesex Canal opened in 1803, tanners from Woburn procured tanbark, and thus the leather business began to boom.
Woburn continued to flourish when the Boston & Lowell Railroad opened in 1835 and expanded further when the Woburn Loop of 1844 starting serving the region.
Around 1836, Woburn also broke into the rubber industry. In East Woburn, Charles Goodyear discovered the process of vulcanization in 1839. The Civil War prompted the leather business to expand. By 1865, Woburn had 21 currying and tanning businesses in town, and there were immigrants from Canada, Nova Scotia, and Ireland arriving every week to get a job in the tanneries.
The 20th century brought support industries into the area, including chemicals, machines, and knives. However, the Great Depression and the changing economy and industrial climate of America prompted an abrupt shift in Woburn. Today, none of the tanneries remain.
Woburn is a mixture of quaint and pleasant residential district intermingled with more commercial roads, vibrant industrial parks, and green conservation zones. The best green space in Woburn is Forest Park, Shaker Glen, Woburn Community Gardens, Cranberry Bog Conservation Area, and the favorite place to run, picnic, and lounge in the sun, Horn Pond.
Since Woburn has such a splendid history, the architecture throughout the city is varied and magnificent. You can pick out specific periods among the buildings. To see the change in architectural styles throughout the years, be sure you visit the Baldwin Mansion from 1661 and the Woburn Public Library—the first library to ever be constructed by Victorian architect H. H. Richardson.
