Want a travel destination that is rich in history and modern-day fun? One that is conveniently located a short drive from Boston but also far enough away to feel completely different? Then it would be best if you visited Wollaston, one of the many neighborhoods of Quincy, Massachusetts. The area is divided into two sides—Wollaston Heights and Wollaston Beach—by Hancock Street (Route 3A).
Not to be confused with Mt. Wollaston, the 17th-century name for Quincy, Wollaston is a small neighborhood between North Quincy and Quincy Center. To the southwest is East Milton and West Quincy. Bordering the east is gorgeous Quincy Bay and Wollaston Beach. While there are several beaches in the area, Wollaston Beach happens to be the largest beach along the Boston Harbor.
The origin of the name Wollaston comes from Captain Richard Wollaston, who had led the original group of settlers. Before the present day, Wollaston was considered a commuter home, but it soon developed into something much more. Now, the area is densely populated and has a few commercial areas to serve the population. Some points of interest in Wollaston include the Josiah Quincy House within Wollaston Park, where East Nazarene College is also located and Wollaston Beach.
The growth of Wollaston is connected to the birth of Quincy—both the city and the family. In 1633, a man named Edmund Quincy emigrated to Massachusetts after receiving a grant for 400 acres. His son went on to establish the Quincy Homestead on this large tract of land. For four years, the Quincy family dwelled in the Wollaston area before Josiah Quincy I constructed a mansion, later known as the Josiah Quincy House, at a place called Lower Farm (now the site of East Nazarene College).
During the 19th century, the Quincy land was developed and transformed into a residential neighborhood, as well as one of the first commuter areas in Massachusetts. When the Wollaston Station was first constructed, residents were even provided with a free one-year pass to and from Boston.
If you are a fast-food fan, you should know that in 1925, the first Howard Johnson’s restaurant was opened in Wollaston. Though that original site is no longer there, the city of Quincy has put a stone marker at the location beside the Wollaston Station to show where the building once stood.
Visiting Wollaston is a treat for people of all ages. There is always something to do, no matter the weather or the time of the year. Plus, you are just a short journey away from other attractions within Quincy. Stopping in Wollaston gives you access to beaches, parks, and much more, so be sure to add it to your trip itinerary when you are in Massachusetts.
Though not all considered Wollaston, there are several historic landmarks in and around the neighborhood that you can and should explore. The first is Eastern Nazarene College and the sprawling campus. Near the college is the Quincy House, and there is also the Cove Fine Arts Center, where you can see beautiful performing arts venues throughout the year.
Slightly farther south of Wollaston Station is the Randolph Bainbridge House, and farther down is The Old House at Peace Field and the Dorothy Quincy Homestead. If you travel down Newport Avenue, you can also reach the incredible Adams National Historical Park at Quincy Center—another fantastic travel destination.
Several places are serving up delicious food in Wollaston, as well. Right along the main thoroughfare of Route 3A is a handful of fast-food chains along with Chinese food, like Winsor Dim Sum Cafe & Bar. For dessert, stop by Confectionately Yours Bakery, a local favorite. If you happen to go to the beach before or after visiting Wollaston, you can stop by one of the seafood restaurants there.
Wollaston also as fabulous parks and nature. You can head towards Merrymount Park and Pine Island to spend the day surrounded by towering trees and hiking. Otherwise, you can lounge in the sun at Wollaston Beach or work up a little sweat at the Furnace Brook Golf Club. One thing is for sure: If you love outdoor activities, you won’t be short of things to do in Wollaston.
Are you looking to get to Wollaston today with public transportation? You can take the B Branch of the Red Line to the MBTA Wollaston Station.
Perhaps you’re a busy Wollaston parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
